What’s your dosha?

Ayurveda is an holistic approach to healing I have looked to in the past couple of decades but in researching about it in the past year and a half I have learned about it in much more depth. In practicing it to regain my health it has become a natural part of my every day life with absolute essential health benefits that I will carry on using for the rest of my life. I find it quite interesting because I need balance in all aspects of my life, in learning how my body works and what type of person I am, in how I react and deal with life helps me understand how to keep myself balanced.

I use mindfulness, meditation, listening to my body and understanding the signs, reading myself and using the resources I have collected to bring myself back into balance. When I am losing balance my sleep is affected, I become cold in my feet, hands and in general. I figure out what the root cause is so I can correct it immediately like removing stress and by drinking warm or hot beverages, eating wet foods like avocados, ghee and the like along with making sure to keep warm with clothes and blankets when I am sleeping are a few thing I do to balance my body for optimal health.

It was developed thousands of years ago in India. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. The primary focus of Ayurvedic medicine is to promote good health, rather than fight disease. But treatments may be recommended for specific health problems.

Adapting this philosophy requires an open mind, I can’t believe the amount of people that are closed minded and won’t even try something new or different even if it would help them heal and to live a healthy balanced life. If one thing isn’t working common sense tells me to try something new.  Look at different avenues to find what works best for you as a whole person along with your health issues. I can guarantee you will benefit from learning Ayurveda and how it relates to your whole being and especially when dealing with disease how it will bring you back to a healthy you or even better stay balanced so you won’t have to fight disease.

Good health is achieved when your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe. A disruption of this harmony can lead to poor health and sickness. For followers of Ayurveda, anything that affects your physical, spiritual, or emotional well-being can cause you to be out of balance with the universe. How your body works to keep you healthy and your unique physical and psychological characteristics combine to form your body’s constitution, or prakriti. Your prakriti is believed to stay the same for your entire life. However, how you digest food and eliminate waste can influence it.

The 5 elements in the universe are earth, wind, fire, water and space and each of us have a combo of these elements.  The three life forces are called doshas, these are : Vata – space and air, Pitta – fire and water, and Kapha – water and earth.

Vata dosha (space and air) is thought to be the most powerful of all three doshas. It controls very basic body functions, such as how cells divide. It also controls your: Mind, Breathing, Blood flow, Heart function, Ability to get rid of body waste through the intestines.  Things that can disrupt this dosha are: Eating dry fruit, Eating too soon after a previous meal, Fear, Grief, Staying up too late.  If vata dosha is your main life force, you are more likely to develop: Anxiety, Asthma, Heart disease, Nervous system disorders, Rheumatoid arthritis, Skin problems.

Pitta Dosha

The pitta dosha (fire and water) controls: Digestion, Ability to break down foods (metabolism), Certain hormones linked to appetite.  Things that can disrupt this dosha are: Eating sour foods, Eating spicy foods, Fatigue, Spending too much time in the sun.
If pitta dosha is your main life force, you are more likely to develop: Anger and negative emotions, Crohn’s disease, Heart disease, Heartburn a few hours after eating, High blood pressure, Infections

Kapha Dosha
The kapha dosha (water and earth) controls: Muscle growth, Body strength and stability, Weight, and Immune system. Things that can disrupt this dosha are: Daytime sleeping, Eating after your stomach is full, Eating or drinking items that have too much salt or water, Eating too many sweet foods and Greed.  If kapha dosha is your main life force, you are more likely to develop: Asthma and other breathing disorders, Cancer, Diabetes, Nausea after eating and Obesity.

Ayurvedic Treatment

Treatment depends on your unique prakriti, your primary dosha, and the balance between all three of them.  A main goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to cleanse your body of undigested food called ama, which can stick to the inside of your body and make you sick. This cleansing process is called panchakarma. It is used to reduce any symptoms and reestablish harmony and balance.

Other treatments may also be recommended to: Restore balance, Improve spiritual healing, Boost your immunity, Reduce symptoms. The treatments may include: Aromatherapy, Breathing exercises, Diet changes, Herbs, vitamins, minerals, and metals, Plant-based oils and spices, Lifestyle changes, Meditation, Stretching and Yoga

I’m a VATA

I am a dominant Vata dosha. I had all the signs and symptoms that vata body types show when vata is not in balance. I had vitamin and mineral deficiency which causes anemia, malnutrition, low blood pressure, weight loss and muscle wasting. Protein deficiency that include symptoms of hair loss and fluid retention. Sugar imbalance having the symptoms of bloating, flatulence, and explosive diarrhea. And fat deficiency with typical symptoms of irregular bowel movements.  If only I had read deeper into Ayurveda sooner I may have recognized the imbalance as an issue and found homeopathy earlier. But I believe every thing happens for a reason and I know I learned a lot more than just about my failing health when I became so ill. Hindsight is 20/20! 😉

Balancing Life: Self Care

Welcome to One Gutsy Lady! The mind, body and soul are all connected, if one is out of balance everything is out of balance. By learning how to keep your body balanced you can avoid illness and disease or if you are like me suffering from autoimmune diseases you can heal and maintain balance through living a holistic lifestyle.

I avoided western medicine and surgery by learning how my body works, how I deal with life, how to read my body and listen to what it is telling me all through biofeedback and a homeopathic practitioner. Not one time did I resort to prescription drugs for Crohn’s or Colitis, doctors were not able to help me when I was so severely anemic that I finally found help with homeopathy.

Balance Life

I originally called this blog “Balance Life” because my body was out of balance and that is why I was incredibly ill.  Not only was anemia, crohns, and colitis wreaking havoc on my body but my entire being was not in balance.  In the first months after a diagnosis I could finally figure out what to do and what not to do to find balance and healing.  On the long journey to find balance I learned so much about the human body, autoimmune diseases and how to live a holistic lifestyle.

One of the many reasons I ended up so ill was that I always pushed past the pain, exhaustion, feeling ill, warn down feeling for far too long that I was not only physically ill but emotionally as well. I had to take time off work to regain my heath so that my body could learn to function again properly on its own. I’m so glad I did even though everyone around me thought it was unnecessary. I see the difference in the way my body is slowly relearning to function that I realize it was for my best interest. I guess sometimes you have to be your own advocate.

Listening to your body

In the past I didn’t take time for myself or listen to my body and I knew that is where I needed to start. I have learned through this process that the balancing of life is tricky and it takes time, patients with yourself and constant monitoring. Since I can remember I have felt like I had to compensate. Not just every day but every minute of every day, that in itself is exhausting.  Working through chronic pain each day having  fibromyalgia, is one thing now add anemia, graves, crohns and colitis to that mix and we are taking about struggling to function every day!

Invisible Illness

People see me and have no idea I struggle, no idea I have three autoimmune diseases and iron deficiency anemia. I walk, talk, act, and look healthy on the outside but I am far from healthy on the inside. Once I got my gut almost healed and I wasn’t sleeping the majority of the day I found I had energy and time to do something and figured it was time to pamper myself! I didn’t know where to start. I found information online along with visiting the local library where I found magazines and videos about yoga, meditation for good health and knew this was a good start in managing stress and sleep, tone muscles and stay active, among other benefits.

Balance has much less to do with what’s going on around us, than it does with what’s going on within us.  Edie Melson

Self Care

Health – physical, spiritual, mental and emotional health requires knowledge, understanding and effort to maintain.

Three aspects of self care: Physical health, spiritual health and emotional health

Breaking down self care to make it manageable:

MIND: Emotional health is about being happy, self-confident, self-aware, and resilient. People who are emotionally healthy are able to cope with life’s challenges and recover from setbacks. Mental health is a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.

BODY: Physical health is the soundness of the body, freedom from disease or abnormality, and the condition of optimal well-being. It is when the body is functioning as it was designed to function.

SOUL: Spiritual health is your beliefs, values, beliefs, principles, and morals define your spirituality. If you are a person engaged in the process of spiritual wellness, you are willing and able to transcend yourself in order to question the meaning and purpose in your life and the lives of others.

Find your happy places

I enjoy reading or watching a fluffy movie or tv series to escape reality. It’s nice to let your brain forget and live somewhere nice and relaxing for awhile.  I love to walk it makes me relax, helps maintain my weight, the rhythm and pace help me think and work through issues, from the day or something that is bothering me. Figure out what you like to do first. Just because certain people jog doesn’t mean it’s for you. I do not enjoy hardcore exercise so I find other ways to get a workout that I actually enjoy doing or I won’t do it at all. Yoga helps to center and align my thoughts and my world to make it manageable. I notice when I am out of balance. If I have not zoned out of reality and submerged myself into a dream or meditative state I find time right away to get back into balance again.

The journey continues…

I have shared my soul searching journey with you in hopes of giving at least one person hope, knowledge and peace in the uncertain time of feeling lost, unbalanced and confused in the months that follow receiving a diagnosis such as IBD.  If you look back at my posts you will see a pattern, a path, some answers, honesty, hope and a variety of ways to help your body adjust to and heal IBD naturally. That’s right Naturally! That means NO prescription drugs, NO over the counter medicines and NO surgery! Not ever, not for the treatment of IBD!

Healing, Remission & Recovery

I needed this outlet (blog) to share what I have learned, the course my life took to find balance and the search and research I have completed to find myself and heal! The people, ideas, health information, cookbooks and positive attitudes in an uncertain time I found along my way were inspirational, helpful and healing. I will keep all of this with me as I move forward in my ever changing life. I am grateful for the hope, peace and my true authentic self I found while healing, finding remission and now recovery over the past months.

Looking back I see how I’ve slowly healed naturally, with homeopathy, holistic medicine, biofeedback and a change in diet. I have to admit it can be done and it is absolutely amazing to say the least.  Watching the transformation my body has taken in the last twenty two months is beyond what I expected.

There is grace in healing naturally!

How life has changed for me in the last couple of months

A couple of weeks house hunting, secured a rental townhouse, moved out of storage into a one bedroom home, winterized my travel trailer an got it safely to storage. Researched accredited colleges, applied, was interviewed and got accepted. I’m going back to school to become a Homeopathic Practitioner. It’s the power of the mind, manifest what you want. Six months ago it never crossed my mind that I would be at this place in my life.

On my way….

This leads me to my next entrepreneurial and website endeaver. I am beginning a new adventure, an entrepreneurial venture that I am extremely excited about. Now that my colitis and crohns are in remission I am starting my dream career. Woodlands Tree Farm!! It’s seasonal but being outdoors and running my own company has been a dream of mine since I was in my 20’s and the time is finally here! I’m jumping in feet first!

Woodlamds Tree Farm start up is in a couple of weeks, going to get people thinking about Christmas! I will be selling Pine, Spruce and Fir Christmas Trees.
