Homeopathy, Biofeedback & Your 1st Visit

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of natural health care that has been in worldwide use for over 200 years.Homeopathy treats each person as a unique individual with the aim of stimulating their own healing ability. A homeopath selects the most appropriate medicine based on the individual’s specific symptoms and personal level of health.

It is recognized by the World Health Organisation as the second largest therapeutic system in use in the world. While it is most popular in India and South America, over thirty million people in Europe, and millions of others around the world, also benefit from its use.
The name homeopathy, coined by its originator, Samuel Hahnemann, is derived from the Greek words for ‘similar suffering’ referring to the ‘like cures like’ principle of healing. Hahnemann was born in Germany two hundred and fifty years ago. At this time the old world-view was being renovated and traditional beliefs, many flimsily based upon superstition, were being increasingly subjected to the rigour of experimental scrutiny and assessment. The practice of Homeopathy is based upon science while its application is an art.
Samuel Hehnemann
Homeopathy is founded on two principles that have occurred regularly throughout the history of medicine, both in eastern and western worlds. The first principle of ‘like cures like’ can be looked at in several ways. One way is to assume that the body knows what it is doing and that symptoms are the body’s way of taking action to overcome illness. This healing response is automatic in living organisms; we term it the vital response. The similar medicine acts as a stimulus to the natural vital response, giving it the information it needs to complete its healing work. Since the initial action of the vital response plus the medicine is to increase the strength of the symptoms, this is our first indication of internal healing taking place, of diseases being cured from within – pushed outwards along the established routes of past and present symptoms.

Before the medicines are decided upon, their curative powers are discovered by testing them out on healthy human subjects and carefully noting emotional, mental and physical changes. This is termed a ‘proving’. This information constitutes the basis for ‘like cures like’, for a medicine’s unique symptom picture must match up with the individual’s unique expression of their disease, that is, the present and persisting symptoms of the disease.

The second principle, that only ‘the minimum dose’ should be employed is based upon the understanding that the stimulus of the medicine works from within the vitality and is not imposed from the outside. Only enough is administered to initiate the healing process, which then carries on, driven by its own internal healing mission. Homeopathic medicines given in minimum doses, while they do stimulate the body’s vital response, do not produce the gross side effects that are so often the pit-fall of conventional treatment.

  • Homeopathic treatment works with your body’s own healing powers to bring about health and well being.
  • You are treated as an individual, not as a collection of disease labels.
  • Homeopathy treats all your symptoms at all levels of your being – spiritual, emotional, mental and physical and finds the ‘like cures like’ match for them.
  • Homeopathically prepared remedies, providing the minimum dose, are gentle, subtle and powerful. They are non-addictive, and not tested on animals.

Biofeedback Therapy

Is a tool used by Homeopathic Practitioners to better evaluate your bodies state of wellness. “Biofeedback is a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance. Precise instruments measure physiological activity such as brainwaves, heart function, breathing, muscle activity, and skin temperature. These instruments rapidly and accurately ‘feed back’ information to the user. The presentation of this information — often in conjunction with changes in thinking, emotions, and behavior — supports desired physiological changes. Over time, these changes can endure without continued use of an instrument” –  Association for Applied Psycho-physiology and Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a form of alternative medicine that involves measuring a subject’s quantifiable bodily functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, skin temperature, sweat gland activity, and muscle tension, conveying the information to the patient in real-time. This raises the patient’s awareness and conscious control of their unconscious physiological activities. By providing the user access to physiological information about which he or she is generally unaware, biofeedback allows users to gain control of physical processes previously considered an automatic response of the autonomous nervous system.

Health Conditions that are said to respond to biofeedback include:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Asthma
  • Attention deficit disorder (ADD and ADHD)
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding, often at night)
  • Circulatory problems such as Raynaud’s Disease
  • Concentration improvement for education and meditation
  • Control of brain waves for spiritual development and inner tranquility
  • Mild depression
  • Epilepsy
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Musculoskeletal disorders involving chronic muscle tension
  • Neuromuscular re-education of gait mechanics
  • Optimal Performance: Sports, Arts, Public Speaking, etc.
  • Chronic pain syndromes
  • Repetitive Strain Injury
  • Stress management techniques
  • Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), jaw pain and dysfunction
  • Tremor disorders/Parkinsonism
  • Urinary incontinence (bedwetting, nocturnal enuresis, leaky bladder)

Interest in biofeedback has waxed and waned since its inception in the 1960s; it is, however, undergoing something of a renaissance during the early 21st century, which some experts attribute to the general rise in interest in a variety of alternative medicine modalities and the mind/body/spirit connection.

What to expect at your first visit to a Holistic Practitioner

You’ll have a chance to talk about your current situation and what you hope to gain from biofeedback.  A baseline analysis with biofeedback assessment (Psychophysiological Stress Profile) will help determine if you are a good candidate for biofeedback.  Don’t worry.  There are no needles or pain involved.
Placement of electrodes on your fingers, shoulders and/or forehead will measure heart rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature, sweat gland activity and muscle tension.  A Velcro belt around your waist will measure your respiratory rate and breathing pattern.  You’ll be able to see your body’s reactions to stress on a computer screen. You’ll learn a lot about your body in just this first visit!  We’ll discuss your results , along with some biofeedback training recommendations. Plan on approximately 90 minutes for your first session.  Subsequent sessions will last 45-60 minutes.

General Biofeedback Measurements

Muscle Tension:  Electromyography (EMG) measures electrical activity of skeletal muscles.  Excess muscle tension and “bracing” can cause fatigue,
pain, muscle spasms and weakness.  Biofeedback increases your awareness of muscle tension.  Learning to decrease tension can lessen symptoms associated with chronic pain, headaches, muscle strain, TMJ and assist
in overall relaxation.

Electrodermal Activity (Galvanic Skin Response) (GSR) (Skin Conductance): Electrical activity on the skin surface corresponds with sweat gland activity. It is highly sensitive to thoughts and emotions and is an indirect indication of your stress response.  Individuals with anxiety or panic attacks can benefit from learning to lessen electrodermal activity.  GSR levels can be affected when perpetual arousal of the sympathetic nervous system begins to put a strain on adrenal gland function.

Skin Temperature: Thermal biofeedback is used to indirectly evaluate blood flow through the vessels under the skin. When stressed, some individuals experience cold hands due to overactive sympathetic nervous system arousal.  A relaxed state increases blood flow and is beneficial to the cardiovascular and immune systems.  You can learn to voluntarily warm your hands.  This can be helpful for those with high blood pressure, pain, migraines, Raynaud’s Disease, complications of diabetes and for overall relaxation.

Heart Rate, Respiratory (Breathing) Rate and Patterns:
You can influence your body’s ability to regulate involuntary functions of the automatic nervous system, simply by improving your breathing patterns.
Learning to enhance cardio-respiratory synchrony (heart rate
coherence) and heart rate variability (respiratory sinus arrhythmia)
has many benefits. There is research that indicates increasing your heart
rate variability may lead to improvements in your stress response, heart and lung function, blood pressure, sleep patterns and cognitive
performance.

During a biofeedback session, a therapist attaches electrical sensors to different parts of your body. These sensors monitor your body’s physiological state, such as brain waves, skin temperature, muscle tension, heart rate and breathing. This information is fed back to you via cues, such as a beeping sound or a flashing light.

The feedback teaches you to change or control your body’s physiological reactions by changing your thoughts, emotions or behavior. In turn, this can help the condition for which you sought treatment.

For instance, biofeedback can pinpoint tense muscles that are causing headaches. You then learn how to invoke positive physical changes in your body, such as relaxing those specific muscles, to reduce your pain. The ultimate goal with biofeedback is to learn to use these techniques at home on your own.

A typical biofeedback session lasts 60 to 90 minutes. The length and number of sessions are determined by your condition and how quickly you learn to control your physical responses. You might need at least 10 to 15 sessions.

My first appointment I filled out a couple of personal information sheets ans signed a consent. Then I was introduced to the practitioner and led into a quiet room with a large comfortable lazy boy recliner. A Velcro band was put around my head across my forehead, then four more smaller ones were put on my wrists and ankles.

Informed to lay still and not to touch my feet or hands together as this will interrupt the process. I relaxed, we talked about my symptoms and how I was feeling. We discussed life and had a lot of laughs at each appointment and over a period of 2 years have become good friends.  I obviously highly recommend these forms of health and wellness care for everyone!

Joining the Beautycounter Movement

I didn’t start blogging to make money or grow a business. I started One Gutsy Lady so that I could make an impact in the autoimmune community after having my life turned upside down from autoimmune diseases.

I have been able to reach people who share something deeply in common: an unyielding effort to better themselves and their family through diet, lifestyle, toxin-free products and emotional healing.

My mission for this website is to a create a community of like minded people who gather here with the sole purpose of improving their physical, mental and emotional health and well-being. I have achieved my mission by offering resources, my personal experiences and establishing a social media community of women who have each other’s backs, and offering my personal experiences in the very public space that is the Internet.

Along the way, I have discovered the ways I can make the farthest reaching positive change. Beautycounter is one of those ways, and it has allowed me to connect with hundreds of women from all walks of life who want to clean up their personal care routine and protect their bodies and their family’s health.

I joined the Beautycounter movement 7 months ago, and it has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only have I gained friendships, but I am able to use my best assets to grow a business while making a positive impact in other people’s lives. It’s a win-win.

After struggling for decades with autoimmune diseases, I have found my happy place with food, exercise and lifestyle choices like my skincare, makeup and household products. Once I educated myself on the negative impact toxic products have on our health, it was both relieving and empowering to make choices that support my health.

Beautycounter is an industry leader advocating for increased regulations in our poorly regulated personal care and cosmetics industry! They advocate and educate lobbyists Parliament and Congress on the need for more stringent safety regulations. You can help by supporting Beautycounter in any of the 3 ways listed below.

Why I took the job at Beautycounter

I live with 4 autoimmune diseases and by January 2015 I almost lost the battle to Crohns Disease. To become that ill I knew that my life was not working. I needed to change my lifestyle and make informed, educated, life changing decisions so that I could beat these diseases. In the healing process over the next two years I searched and researched how to heal naturally through diet which lead me deep into the health and wellness spectrum.

I followed many people who are a part of new movements in Paleo, autoimmunity and whole foods.  Last year one of those individuals introduced me to Beautycounter on her Instastory talking about BC products and how she was thinking about switching to healthier cosmetics.  I immediately went to their website and learned about safer beauty. Beautycounter’s branding is stunning, their mission to get safer beauty care products into the hands of everyone is inspiring and the products are high performing. I knew I wanted to be a part of this movement too.

Since 2000 I have struggled with allergic reactions to fragrances by getting sinus infections, pink eye from cosmetics and rashes from deodorant just to name a few. Beauty care products that are safe, that I can use and wear without reacting to or feeling sick was a search I was on for over a decade. I didn’t think it would ever happen, but here was a company that would give me peace of mind about what I put on my skin daily. I had to dive in!

A little over a decade ago I started learning about toxins and chemicals in food and cleaning products and did a huge shift in my home for the health of my family so, this was the next natural step in my healing journey.  Seeing that BC had launched in Canada on March 14, 2016 I knew this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.  On December 1st I decided to become a Beautycounter Consultant hoping it would help propel me into the working world again and to try to get some momentum after not functioning for so long.

I partnered with Beautycounter to help share our mission to get safer beauty care products into the hands of everyone. We are working towards a future where we don’t have to read labels for toxic ingredients. Help make an impact on the beauty industry by educating and informing others on toxins and chemicals. We are a movement! Join me in being a voice for change, because we deserve it!

Over the past two decades, the European Union has banned more than 1,300 chemicals in the product formulas of personal care products and restricted the levels of over 250 more in such products. In Canada, Health Canada maintains a current list of close to 500 chemicals that are prohibited for use in cosmetic products and a current list of close to 80 chemicals that are restricted for use in cosmetic products. The United States has only partially banned 30 to date.

At Beautycounter, we’re committed to a health and safety standard that goes well beyond what’s required by U.S. and Canadian law: We’ve banned the use of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals

I want to live a healthy life so I can be here to continue watching my daughters grow old and to watch their children grow and thrive into the future. This empowering career opportunity will also allow me to further my education in becoming a Homeopathic Practitioner so I can help save lives. Thank you Gregg Refrew for having a vision to change the world and making it happen! #takethejob.

My Heartland Wilderness RV

My blog is about natural healing, wellness, holistic care, food, ultimately the human process of living a balanced life.  So, why a post about my Wilderness trailer by Heartland RV you may be wondering. Well, its quite simple in terms of the peace and serenity it gave me that I needed to heal, but complicated in the way of learning something so out of my realm on my own when I was so ill.

1 year ago ~ July 30th 2015

A year ago today I picked up my brand new travel trailer from the GM dealership and drove it home to the rental we had only 4 more hours left to be in and loaded it up with everything I needed for comfortable living at that time, everything else was already in a storage unit waiting to decorate another home in the near future. I had a blue Dodge Hemi lifted and decked out with a very loud exhaust that sounded beautiful to me! I loved that truck but it was a lemon and put me in debt, I had more debt caused by that truck alone than I had ever had with anything else.

1 year ago today

I set up house at a campground near by and lived there for one month and one week. I loved it there it was peaceful, relaxing and not far from my work. The owner was great he helped by backing the trailer into the campsite and showed me how to set up and make sure I was good to go.  I had enough of that town/city and wanted so desperately to be done with it once and for all so I moved an hour away and again set up house and loved living there as well. It was treed like the last place but had more area to walk.

August 2015

Although I felt safe at the start it quickly changed. I moved there on August 6th 2015 and left January 8th 2016. I picked the spot I wanted, got into a groove of driving 2 hours to and from work, it was a 15 minute drive to town for groceries and other amenities.  Found a great doctor and planned to permanently move to this new town/city, actually that was in the works for a couple of years but I was finally putting it into action. I went to the library once a week, cooked or baked once a week and was enjoying myself very much. I was feeling the best I had in a very long time at this point and thought I was on the mend.

I had to do something about my money sucking truck so I bought a brand new brownstone 2015 Chevy Silverado LT, and again fell in love with my very own, very first brand new truck. Since I can remember I had wanted to have my own Chevy truck, finally I have one!! I was very proud of myself to have reached that point in my life to be able to buy a new travel trailer and truck in the same year.

October 2015

The months passed and the cold fall temps took hold and for some reason the owner of this campground didn’t ask me to move to a different spot ahead of time but he came to my trailer one night and asked if I could move right now! Other people needed that spot and he could put me somewhere else.  If he had of told me in advance I would probably have moved on to a different campground because I didn’t like any of the other spots he had available.  For some reason he changed his mind that night as he got held up doing something else. I had taken the past 2 hours to get the trailer in moving mode for no reason I thought.  He contacted me the next day while I was at work to tell me he would move my trailer to a spot during the day while I was away. I didn’t like this once so ever but had no choice so he said everything would be done by the time I got home and laughed when I was unsure of it all.

When I got back my trailer was moved, nothing was hooked up, it wasn’t leveled and my poor cat was scared and hiding, took me two and half hours to find her.  It was a horrible spot as the neighbour left for work anywhere between 3 and 5 o’clock in the morning and her truck was parked two feet from my bed. She would start it up and of course it was a duly which are very loud and she would open and close all the doors and the tailgate. This went on for two weeks until I complained I couldn’t take it any more. So the owner said he would move me to another spot once he had the hook ups installed.  This took another two and half weeks, by this time I was ill but in a different way and knew I could not move to another campground and still be able to work and make food for myself I was already struggling more than necessary to function. At this point my gut and digestive track were slightly working better and my crohns and colitis symptoms were rearing their ugly heads!

In hindsight I should have asked for help and moved on up the road! But hindsight as we all know is 20/20. This is where it all went wrong. Allowing him to control me when he moved my trailer was a big mistake, he knew I was sick and took advantage of that, but this was only the beginning. As I look back I realize he was interested in me, but I had no idea because I was so sick and struggling to stay a float, literally speaking!!!!! Plus I didn’t care for many reasons one being I was not interested in him as I didn’t find him a nice person or attractive and two the most important, he’s married! Seriously, what the hell is wrong wrong with people. I didn’t want his help, I never asked for his help he would force it upon me and I had to be nice for fear he may do something because by now I had a bad feeling about him, I was getting bad vibes I didn’t pick up on before. There was no where for me to go. I was already driving 2 hours for work and to move at that point was not an option as I knew I couldn’t do it physically.

November 2015

I prepared myself for winter and skirted the bottom of my trailer for insulation and put an outdoor heater under or rather inside the cozy walls of my “basement”. It was -19 to -22 degrees by now as I had to wait for money from my CP contributions as I was no longer working. I put the skirting on one side myself and the back and he helped me finish up the other side and the front. I couldn’t find heavy pieces of wood to secure the silver heating skirting so he brought some for me. This was nice of him but they were railroad trusses which would have been heavy enough to hold the skirting down plus I told him I didn’t know how long I would be staying.  Never the less he used railroad nails to hold the wood down by hammering them into the frozen ground. When he did this to the first one I said “oh that doesn’t need to be done, I’ll put the wood down on it’s own tomorrow myself.” Believe me I didn’t want his help and I could do it all by myself in bits and pieces so that it was done my way, on my terms so that I could remove the wood and leave when I wanted to.  He insisted and hammered ever truss so that I couldn’t get them out on my own.

Silver insulation skirting ~ Ready for winter!

December 2015

We are now into December and the Christmas season and all I want to do was SLEEP!!!!!!!  My last day of work was November 13th I was sleeping 12 – 14 hours every night and wanted to sleep all day but knew I had to get up to get water, food and natural medicines into me. The water lines froze a couple of times under ground so he would come and fix that and I would be without water for a couple of days. On Dec 16th I didn’t have water again but had been without it for a couple of days already but it worked for a half a day. This time it was on my end that the water slightly froze in my pipes but nothing major, his fuse blew and the heater was off for about 2-3 hours. Neither of us knew this at the time so he came to fix it again and made a major error, one that not even I would make being a female and all, he used a damn wrench on my brand new trailer and brand new heated water hose and busted the water connection on my trailer!

I sensed something was up when he knocked on my door so quickly and agitated so I  got my boots and coat on and ran outside to see what he was up to, as I walked to the other side of the trailer he was standing their with the wrench on my connections with is eye so wide open and he mouth gaping and asked “Do you have a wrench?” And I said for the 3rd time as he had asked me before “No, I don’t have a wrench, you have one in your hands.” He then showed me that the water was running in the hose just fine and to wait a bit until thing thawed. He plugged that damn water hose back onto my trailer and turned the water back on and left. He didn’t tell me he had broke my water connection. That my friends is what you call a weasel, a selfish no good human being that is a coward!

There was no leaking inside or outside of my trailer and by 3 am the water had thawed and the leaking began. It made a huge ice chunk on the outside of my trailer and flooded the inside of my trailer.  That bastard who was knocking on my door at any time of the day at any given hour and disturbing me needlessly for the past 4 months became a ghost, he was nowhere to be found, not once did he come knocking on my door after that, not once did he offer to help me, not once did he drive past to see what I was doing looking for a reason to come over to talk to me. I never once saute him out! He knew what he had done, cowardly and sheepishly made himself scarce. He never fessed up to damaging my travel trailer even when confronted.

January 2016

As soon as the RV repair staff where back from Christmas vacation which was January 4th 2016 I struggled with lack of energy, weakness and mental capacity to do everything that had to be done an tow my trailer 20 minutes west to get repaired and move into a different RV resort as far away from crazy wrench owner. This town is the place I was being pulled to for the past 6 or 7 years long before I moved to Alberta. I’m glad to say that no one has bothered me since and I found nice managers and owners at the first, third and fourth campgrounds I resided in.  I am staying here surrounded by beautiful trees until I am ready to move on, on my own terms!

I was very lucky that Alberta had one of the mildest winters on record this past year or I know I wouldn’t have made it living the RV lifestyle this long, simply because I was not prepared nor had I done enough research to prep for the winter months.

Today ~ 1 year later 🙂

June 30th 2016

Some people may not understand but to live in an RV for 1 full year is a huge accomplishment and I feel I weathered the experience with success! If it wasn’t for that one campground owner messing with my trailer nothing would have gone wrong!

Wilderness RV’s are a great choice and I’m so glad I own a Heartland! It has been the best year of my life living in my RV by myself (and my cat Lucy) in terms of healing and learning about myself, absorbing the peace and serenity of remote places, being close to the mountains and nature which, to me, doesn’t get any better this!

I wanted freedom and I found it in my Heartland RV! Cheers to RV living for 1 full year!

Happy Camping Everyone!
