My entrance essay to the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine. I applied and was accepted into the Homeopathic Practitioner Program last month.
Studying homeopathy professionally would be a rewarding career, because I have firsthand experience observing how homeopathy helps heal the body. For the past twenty two months I have observed amazing progress and unbelievable success.
By January 2015 I was dangerously anemic; even more than the initial Western Doctor’s 2012 appointment indicated. I was told at that time my blood levels were dangerously low which was an unhealthy way to be living my life. I started taking iron supplements that were unsuccessful and having several blood work requisition and an ultrasound with no answers, I knew when the doctor shrugged his shoulders at me on my last visit that I needed to take my health into my own hands. This is when I determined that Western Medicine wasn’t going to be my healing path. At this point I was desperate, panicked and grasping at strings because I could tell that my body was not functioning properly.
On January 16th, 2015 I began monthly visits to a homeopathic practitioner who also uses biofeedback. The results of the full body analysis showed I was horribly out of balance. My gut was severely infected, so my body was not absorbing nutrients. I had no vitamins or minerals and to my horror I learned that if you don’t have calcium in your body your heart will stop, because your heart needs calcium to pump. I believe this is the moment when I realized I was close to death that my life changed. The combination of being anemic and extremely malnourished for over three years was wreaking havoc on my body which was scary to say the least.
At the age of 43 my muscles were wasted, my skin had started shutting down along with my lungs due to insufficient oxygen being transported in my blood. My liver, bladder, bowel, colon, small intestine, stomach and kidney were in distress. My hair was falling out, eye brows and eye lashes were thinning. My weight was fluctuating 10-15 pounds over a very short period of time. I was having trouble concentrating, and day after day I didn’t feel I was rejuvenated after sleeping from the day before.
In November 2015 I was diagnosed with Crohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. I had previously been diagnosed by a Specialist in Toronto with Fibromyalgia having all 18 trigger points at age 17 in 1989; they thought I had lupus but nothing more was done when the blood work came back negative. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease at age 29 in 2001. Knowing what I know now I would think a Medical Doctor would have clued in long ago that I must have an underlying issue which was causing other diseases to set in especially when I was anemic for three years without any sign of improvement.
Since learning that I have CD and UC plus experiencing this last flare I look back and can tell every time I’ve had a flare since I was 9 years old. Recalling experiencing the exact same symptoms but each time I was passed off as having the flu, food poisoning, I ingested the water or ice cubes from a place my body wasn’t use to or I must have had motion sickness. There was always an excuse and I was never taken to the doctor for these symptoms as a child or a preteen. Struggling most of my life with my health it started with a digestive system that was compromised which began my battle with childhood tonsillitis at the age of three and a half. Year after year until I was twelve I suffered with tonsillitis at least three times each year which lead to the overuse of antibiotics wreaking havoc on the lining of my GI track creating a perfect environment for disease.
Gratefully, I can say with certainty that my health is almost to the point I will no longer need medication or homeopathic care for the health issues I have described thus far. Needless to say homeopathy and homeopathic medicine saved my life! When working with a homeopathic practitioner they give you guidance, knowledgeable information about how your body functions and they give you the resources you need to find healing. Over the course of months with her help I knew I needed to change my lifestyle. That started with a complete overhaul of my diet, removing people in my life that were toxic and anything else that wasn’t working for that matter. Learning self-care instead of giving everything I had to everyone but myself and making life decisions based on what I want, not what others thought would be best for me.
Telling my health story sets the stage to the reason why I want to practice homeopathy as a professional. In the last twenty two months I have absorbed as much knowledge as possible to help me in healing by studying homeopathy, holistic healing modalities, Ayurveda, ecology and spirituality. I’ve studied how food affects our bodies; the benefits of alkaline foods, inflammation-causing night shades and harmful grains to name a few, along with the chakra system and dosha characteristics. How homeopathic medicines heal and how a person should be cared for as a whole person not as a patient. We are all unique and what works for one person may not be the answer for the next.
In February of this year I started a blog called One Gutsy Lady. I wanted to share my experiences and research with the world and show all IBD suffers that healing can be done naturally with the help of homeopathy and allowing the body to heal itself. I see online where individuals with CD and UC are struggling taking prescription medications that cause side effects on top of the debilitating symptoms of these diseases. Others who are having surgery to remove bowel, intestine, colon, even upper leg muscles because the prescription medication is no longer working for them. I find this extremely disturbing especially because these individuals may be able to avoid these evasive procedures with homeopathy, like I have.
Educating myself has given me confidence in sharing my story on my blog each week. It is also therapeutic. To this point it has helped me work through my illness, healing, my childhood, past relationships and to figure out my future goals and dreams. Healing is a gradual process, a gentle, kind, careful and strategic progression that is so beautiful to observe. I feel a strong need to help others find their balance in mind, body and spirit so, they too can live a healthy life and thrive. Everyone has a unique body language and if we learn to listen we would all be better off.
I want to make a difference in this area of health by educating people on the benefits of homeopathy. Many people don’t understand the concept, some people are skeptical, others have never heard about natural healing because let’s face it; our society is all about a quick fix. Helping people comes naturally to me and watching people flourish and feel positive and healthy is most important to me. I believe that a career should not feel like work because you should love what you do. If I were able to assist individuals the way my homeopathic practitioner has helped me, my career would be a dream.
I love the concept behind the philosophy of homeopathy which naturally blends with how I view health, healing and life. I feel that becoming a homeopath is the next phase of my journey now that I have found my authentic self. I have naturally discovered the direction I want my life to go, and healed so that I can function on a normal level.
